Great chance for the Penguins to become the number 1 team in the NHL tonight, if they can beat the Toronto Maple Leafs who are coming off a home loss against the Montreal Canadiens last night.
Leafs once again outshot their opponents at the Air Canada Centre but Canadiens got away with a 3-2 victory thanks to Halak's outstanding performance.
Penguins did not play yesterday so this will be first time they play since Wednesday's 8-2 thrashing of the Ottawa Senators. Pens have won four of their last five games with the single loss once again coming against the New Jersey Devils. They suffered yet another loss at the hands of the Devils last Monday, which made it the third defeat against them this season.
Penguins have only one injured player, that being Mark Eatan as the defender is out with a lower body injury. Leafs are without defenders Gunnarsson and Can Ryn, as well as forwards Mitchell and Stalberg. Vesa Toskala is expected to start tonight for the visitors while Fleury will try to stop the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Pittsburgh is 8-3 SU in its last 11 games at home. They beat the Leafs back in October with a score of 5-2 in Toronto. This will be the first time this season they play each other at the Mellon Arena.
Penguins are not one of the better powerplay teams in the NHL but they looked like they are about to change it when they scored 3 goals on 8 powerplay attempts against the Senators. That came after 10 consecutive powerplays without a goal for them.
Leafs outshot their opponents everytime in their last five games but amazingly they only won one of them. That was a home win against the Boston Bruins 8 days ago.
Toronto Maple Leafs are the worst team in the NHL when it comes to penalty killing. If the Penguins can repeat their powerplay against the Senators, they can take advantage of this. After the Christmas break, they should be well rested and Toronto Maple Leafs are playing their second game in as many nights.
