LA Kings @ Chicago Blackhawks
Both teams have three losses in their last five games and both teams have five losses so far this season. It is without doubt that the Kings have exceeded expectations going 10-5-2 while the Blackhawks have not been as good as last year.
They have been without their captain Jonathan Toews since October 22 and it only made things worse for them. He is expected to return tonight. That may be the turning point for them.
"He looked better and ratcheted things up to a different level," Chicago coach Qunneville told the paper. "We'll see how he is in the morning."
So if he plays he is likely to add energy to this team even if he is not at his best after concussion like problems.
I liked the way Hawks played in Colorado despite their shoot out loss. They had a 2-0 advantage and had many chances to finish off the Avs but they lacked that last touch.
Kings are coming off a loss on home ice against the Predators which was unexpected.
They won their last road game tho, beat the Phoenix Coyotes 5-2 after losing to San Jose Sharks with only one goal. So they have been pretty good overall. Let's not forget their win against the defending Stanley Cup Champions. They rallied back in third period to win that one 5-2.
This is going to be a very difficult game on paper. Let's look at some stats.
Los Angeles is 8-17 SU in its last 25 games on the road, Chicago is 5-2 SU in its last 7 games when playing at home against Los Angeles. Last season they met in Chicago twice and the Blackhawks won both of those games comfortably in regulation time.
Kings are of course much different from last season's team and they have played some solid hockey against the top teams in the NHL. Still the return of Toews and more promising game in recent games, added to home ice advantage, I see the Blackhawks making a statement tonight and start winning hockey games consistently.
LAST MINUTE UPDATE: It is now official that Jonathan Toews will be on ice tonight. That's very good news for the Blackhawks. There is even more as they announced the return of Ben Eager too.
