Free NHL Pick: New Jersey Devils @ Philadelphia Flyers

April 29, 2012

Devils who knocked out Panthers will visit the Flyers who beat their arch rivals Penguins in the 1st round. That was the wildest series we have seen in years. I doubt we will see a series like that this season again. Every match, it went one side and then the other, come back and come back and finally the Flyers went through.

Devils and Panthers series was nowhere close. Low scoring games and inconsistent matches by each team. In the end it was the Devils who progressed.

In regular season, Devils beat Flyers two times in three matches in Philadelphia but in the last match, it was Flyers who blanked the Devils 3-0 on home ice. Kovalchuk was the best of Devils against the Flyers in regular season and him and Zajac has bee leading the team in the playoffs as two players totaled 11 points.

For the Flyers, Giroux without a doubt has been amazing. He has had 6 goals and 8 assists in 6 games against Penguins and has been the best player in playoffs so far. Danny Briere has scored 5 goals so far and he is right behind Giroux with 8 points.

The biggest problem with Devils against the Panthers was their inability to defend and kill penalties. The number 1 penalty killing team in regular season, Devils looked like a completely different team in first round of playoffs. They still had Martin Brodeur, not even at this best, with his 2.06 GAA helped Devils progress.

This series between Devils & Flyers will not be about goaltenders. Panthers is like the opposite of Flyers. Very defensive team who waits for its opponent to make mistakes before striking. Flyers on the other hand love to score as many as they can. Devils will have to keep up with them if they want to have a chance against the Flyers. They also have to improve their penalty killing  as they are going to face the number 1 team on powerplays. 52.2% on the powerplays against the Penguins. I am not sure but that might be a record in NHL playoffs. I wonder how the Devils will stand against such a team when they are shorthanded. They'd better keep out of the penalty box today.
